Living with ADHD

My 10 year old step-daughter was recently diagnosed with ADD While I haved heard of this for years, this is the first time I am learning more details about it. Her parents are divorced and both are re-married. Her mother and step-father recently moved out of state. Which isn’t all together a bad thing — long story.

When she was younger, she had severe speech problems. Although she has made vast improvements in this area, there are still times that it is hard to understand her. Her maturity level is more along the lines of a 5 or 6 year old, which makes it very difficult sometimes. We have 2 other children in the house, as well. My daughter, age 10 1/2, and my step-son, who is almost 13.

We have tried patience, talking, scolding, yelling, grounding, counseling and are now on medication (Concerta), which I am not totally on board with, and nothing seems to help. I think if I understood how she is feeling inside, I would be better able to help her. I have to say, it is very frustrating. Anyone with any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
