Know your own body

by: Deanna on Mon, Jun 18 2007

I was 32 and went for a routine checkup and because I was a smoker my doctor checked my throat carefully at every physical. He found a lump which he thought might be Hodgkins and he sent me to another doctor who after a very very cursory exam said it was nothing and sent me home.

4 months later I had a lump on my neck that did not have to be felt to know it was there! Went back to the original doctor and this time he sent me to an ear nose and throat specialist who determined the lump started on my thyroid and spread to the lymph nodes, He referred me to the local teaching hospital and within 2 weeks I was having the surgery etc associated with thyroid cancer. I had a biopsy and that was inconclusive though my surgeon said he knew it was cancer and was treating it as such.

I had a total thyroidectomy along with removal of 25 positive nodes. 4-5 weeks later I had the radioactive iodine treatment and follow up appts for 11 years! I’m now 17 years post cancer and grateful for such talented caring health care providers. I also no longer allow any professional to brush me off - I know if I am not feeling well or if something is just not right and have no problem pushing them if I feel the need!
